Judith Elliot has inherited her ancestral English manor home, Barnsley, and is having a hard time keeping it up. It's 60-plus rooms, it's expensive - - oh, and it's haunted. Everytime Judith thinks she has a buyer for Barnsley, the ghosts of her ancestors show up and scare the buyers away.

That is, until Mrs. Millicent Malone comes along. She comes from America and she wants to buy Barnsley BECAUSE it is haunted, so she can prove the existence of ghsots. Tagging along is her dry-witted and handsome nephew, Henry, who makes Judith reconsider whether she's really in love with her current fiance, Archie.

When the ghosts catch wind of what Mrs. Malone wants to prove - they decide they don't much feel like showing up for dinner. So Judith hatches a plan to "manufacture phenomena" in their absence.

Will their plan work? Will Judith sell Barnsley? Will Mrs. Malone prove the existence of ghosts? Will Judith choose Archie or Henry? Will Archie or Henry put up a fight?
